Siemens to build factory for trams in Turkey
Siemens announced an upcoming investment in the growth market for urban public transport. The company will build an assembly factory for trams in the Turkish city of Gebze, near Istanbul, and begin production of its first vehicles in 2018. Around EUR 30m will be invested in the localizing of manufacturing and supply chain in Turkey, which will provide the company with better chances for winning tenders as well as substantial cost advantages for international orders.
Siemens is already cooperating with local manufacturing partners in Turkey on a project basis and intends to secure its competitiveness in the tram market following the recent growth of urban rail transportation business. The rail industry as a whole is increasingly depending on international production networks, noted company speakers.
"Our Avenio series trams have already proven themselves in some countries. We are now aiming at building on this success in the global market. We have the best chances of succeeding here with a factory in Turkey," said Jochen Eickholt, head of Siemens' rail business.
