Dutch company invests in the Romanian hemp business
Dutch company HempFlax, active in the processing of hemp, announced that it has invested EUR 5 million in the Romanian hemp business and has opened its first factory in Alba country. HempFlax designs, develops and patents specialized equipment for hemp cultivation, which manages to combine the harvesting of the hemp seeds, stems and leaves at the same time.
Romania was the fourth largest exporter of hemp in the world before 1989, but the volume fell to only a few hectares in 2000. The investment made by HempFlax indicates a possible return of interest for the market. The company's cultivated area in 2015 is approximately 500 hectares, with investors expecting an increase by approximately 300 hectares year by year.
"Through innovation and vigour, HempFlax contributes to the concept of agrification in Romania. Providing renewable resources, synthetic fibers made from fossil resources - such as nylon, fiberglass and plastics - can be replaced by fibers from these natural resources such as hemp," said HempFlax general director Oana Suciu.
